FINE C. 1860 LOUIS XVI STYLE BRONZE MOUNTED INLAID WRITING DESK AFTER JEAN-HENRI RIESENER

For the collector of very fine French antique furniture, I am pleased to offer this very fine Louis XVI style gilt bronze mounted marble top and tulipwood parquetry and amboyna inlaid writing desk after Jean-Henri Riesener which dates to 1860, with a breakfronted top above a bronze frieze mounted with a panel of putti musicians and vitruvian scrolls, two glass doors and one central door having a bronze oval plaque displaying very finely chassed birds and foliage. The lower section is fitted with a sliding writing surface covered in blue velvet, foliage case mounts and a central medallion flanked by two drawers, all on square tapered legs fitted with ram's heads and husks. The bronze lock plate is mounted on the interior edge of the door and is engraved "Jean Henri Riesener, M. E." Jean Henri Riesener, 1734-1806, a French cabinet maker, was one of the major artists who made important contributions to the formation of the Louis XVI style in Paris. Born in Germany, he early moved to Paris and joined the workshop of J.F. Oeben, with whom he collaborated in the creation of Louis XV's writing desk, finished in 1769 which was one of the supremely fine achievements of 18th century cabinet making. After Oeben's death, Riesener became conductor of the Arsenal workshops and continued the production of sumptuous furniture for the court and fashionable society. He received the official title of "ebeniste du roi" (Cabinet Maker to the King). Riesener's furniture pieces are distinguished for their architectural lines, finely executed adornments in chiseled bronze and exquisite marquetry craftsmanship. Examples may be found at the National Gallery of Art, the Louvre, Fontainbleau, Windsor, the Wallace collection and the Getty Museum. The desk measures 53" tall and 38" wide. The depth measures 19 1/2". The condition is excellent. Please e-mail for a more detailed condition report of for additional photos. Arrangements can also be easily made for viewing.
